English Degrees - Log 005

Seed.
A couple days ago I was thinking about approaching the English language from an academic perspective. Here's where I'll write what I find interesting after doing some research about English degrees.

What does an English degree cover?
The goal of an English degree is to help students think more creatively and analytically about the English language. It is intended for students already proficient in written and spoken English. An English degree can focus on literature and language, though some may specialize in one or the other.

A course with a focus on literature will allow you to analyze texts from diverse authors and periods throughout history. Reading said texts will require you to analyze multiple factors about them, including their social, economical, historical and political contexts.

An English-language focused degree will train you to analyze the use of English outside of literature, including language-based communication in all kind of forms and contexts. This might include analysis of casual conversation or the uses of language in specialized fields like medicine.

Course structure.
Much of the course will require you to spend several hours doing research outside of class.

Average hours of contact time with professors and fellow student may vary, but you can expect between 10-12 hours and week. You are expected to spend another 20-30 hours working solo on research and tackling your reading list.

Key skills and assessment methods.
The aim of this course is to force the student to develop his analytical thinking, due to this lecturers will expect you'll accomplish most of the work independently. Debates and sharing of ideas during group discussions with fellow students provide an environment to take your knowledge to a higher level.

An English degree is typically assignment-based, with essays and papers to be submitted regularly. You may be assessed based on your contributions to group discussions. It depends on the institution.

Depending on the country, it will take up to four years to earn a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in English, and a further one or two years to achieve a Master of Arts (MA).

English specializations.
Often, after completing your first year studying for an English degree, students get the change to opt for a niche specialization. The first year is usually spent learning basic literary concepts and a solid ground of the history of literature and fiction.

From the second year onwards there will be a variety of topics to choose from, often taught by experts in each field.

Creative writing.
Creative writing or other creativity-focused modules are a popular choice amongst undergraduates. These modules will allow you to continue analyzing and reading literature but with the perspective and knowledge of a practiced writer.

Linguistics.
This module will include a deeper look into how language works and its origins, within a more scientific framework than the one commonly used in a regular English language and literary degree.
